Introduction to Greenhouse Gasses and their Health Consequences

Climate change is mostly the warming up of the earth's temperature caused by greenhouse gasses trapping heat from the sun in our atmosphere. This increase in temperature throws off the world's balance and can result in numerous health conditions, such as the degradation of the atmosphere increasing cancer caused by UV radiation, or the heat itself being trapped by buildings in urban areas, making them several degrees hotter. This increase in heat can lead to health problems such as increased dehydration and heat stroke.

Greenhouse gasses are one of the leading causes of climate change, and there are a few different types that affect our atmosphere. The first one is carbon dioxide, which takes up around 3 quarters of all our emissions. Carbon dioxide mostly comes from burning things like wood, solid waste, and fossil fuels. Another greenhouse gas is methane. While it doesn't stay in the air as long as carbon dioxide, it is almost 85x more potent. It comes from natural gas, petroleum industries, landfills, and agriculture. Methane makes up about 16% of our total emissions. Nitrous oxide is also a greenhouse gas, and only makes up 6% of our emissions. However, this gas is around 264x more potent than carbon dioxide over two decades. agriculture and burning fuels are the biggest contributors to this gas.

There are other gasses that can be even more severe than these ones, but thankfully they make up much smaller quantities to our total emissions. I hope this post has left you a better understanding of the different types of greenhouse gasses, and more posts will be coming soon!
